Research

My research is about the ways in which food- and water-borne pathogenic bacteria survive in the environment and maximise their chances of infecting a new host. We are using a combination of ecological and molecular methods to trace the infection routes of pathogens in farm and aquatic environments.

            Current projects include:

Microbial contamination of irrigation water and fruit and vegetables (2004- 2007)

Joanna Heaton is a PhD student on this project funded by WaterWeb, a EU Framework VI project on irrigation, in collaboration with Serbia, Macedonia, Portugal, Denmark and the UK (Newcastle). Funding is £100,000 jointly with Bill Davies and Mark Bacon..

Wild birds as vectors for human disease.

Clare Benskin is a PhD student funded by NERC and co-supervised by Ian Hartley                           and Ken Wilson

Epidemiology of Haemophilus influenzae.

Dawn Smith (Lab manager at Lancaster Royal Infirmary) is a PhD student on this                         Project co-supervised by David Telford.
